Montana is an 8 year old registered Quarter Horse gelding standing 15.2 hands high. Montana is the best of the best in every way. He is as broke and educated as they come, safe, sensible, and versatile. Put him in English tack and go hunt, jump around a hunter course, or do dressage. Under western tack he is experienced roping, doctoring calves, and well versed in all ranch work. The coolest part? You can do all of this, and more, bareback and bridleless! There are very few horses that can truly do ANYTHING and do it both safely and well. Put him in any ring or scenario and he will be the top of his class.  If our kids have friends over and want to trail ride, Montana is the guy. If we want to go hunting or on a hunter pace, Montana is game. Want to try something new? Montana is the best parter to learn with! Whether you are looking to get back into riding, starting out, or want an educated gentleman who can take you to the next level, Montana will make any rider happy and confident.

In the ring, Montana is broke to the nines. It doesn’t matter if you are English, western, bareback, or bridleless. He has three quality, easy to sit gaits that are adjustable and smooth. He has seamless transitions and always picks up the correct lead. He has a good stop, one hand neck rein,  spin, lope off, and knows all the lateral work. He works great off leg and seat cues, and knows how to go in a frame or ride on the buckle. Most horses broke this well are touchy and sensitive, with Montana this is not the case. He has all the bells and whistles without ever overfacing an inexperienced rider. He is extremely smart about who’s on his back, and is just as happy to poke around with the kids and beginners as he is to step up and work. He goes when you ask him to go, and stays slow and steady when he needs to be. He is as “Dummy Proof” as you could ever wish! Unsteady hands, unbalanced seat, or a nervous rider is no bother to him, he is happy to be a tolerant partner to his rider. Over fences, Montana has proven to be quite the little hunter! He pops over anything you put in front of him and will jump from ANY and I mean any distance. He is putting together small courses, and has jumped up to 3’ in the ring with room for more. He does have flying changes, though they are not automatic at this point. With his education, dressage comes naturally to him. He is schooling first level tests with all of the movements that are ready to be put together and go up the levels.

On the trail and off property, Montana is brave and happy. He was born and raised on the Open Spear Ranch in Montana where he has done and seen every job there is. The man who rode him there said “He has probably roped 1000 wheat pasture cattle in his life if not more.” This horse not only has an amazing story, but an amazing foundation that set him up to be the versatile and smart horse he is today. That being said, there isn’t much this horse hasn’t seen, and there isn’t a thing that has gotten him worked up or spooked here. And that says a lot! He doesn’t care about traffic, atvs, crazy kids, blow up dinosaurs, turkeys, hounds, cattle, trains, gunfire, smoke, fire, or riding through town into Tractor Supply. He has simply seen it all. You can ride Montana alone, or in a group. Use him to pony the kids or to lead a less confident horse across an obstacle. He is safe and steady in any and all terrain, loves swimming, and has gone on camping trips. Though we have not formally hunted Montana, He has been used to work our Squirrel dogs and is familiar with hounds. He has also been on various hunting trips where he has been shot off of, and ridden in large packs. This horse is used to loading up and going to different places, and is a gentleman every step of the way. He trailers with perfect manners, ties to the trailer, stands on a high line, and needs no prep when going to a new place. Simply saddle up and have fun!  We often take Montana off property to school and go on hunter paces. He loves to jump and pops right over logs, coupes, ditches, walls, and any other obstacles we have come across.

In the barn, Montana is not all work and no play. He genuinely loves the attention he gets from our kids and their friends. He will follow them around like a puppy dog all day long. One of the kids has taken to playing “Heartland” and enjoys joining up and doing groundwork. He is the best boy for all of the usual, and unusual, barn tasks. He can be clipped, bathed, tacked, groomed, loaded into the trailer, and brought in and out from the field by even our youngest children. Montana is sweet and gentle, with a kind soul. He wants to do his best no matter the task at hand. It’s no wonder he is everyone’s favorite here!

Now why would we sell this near perfect specimen you ask? Well, personally I wish we weren’t! But, if we keep one we have to keep one for every member of the family, and then we would be out of business. But, we are so grateful for the opportunity to have had Montana with us in our program. He is a once in a lifetime horse that none of us will ever forget. It is such a rare find to have such a truly talented and versatile animal that everyone in the family, and their friends can safely enjoy. Montana has no vices or bad habits, and is sound as the day is long. He is the easiest of keepers that is happy living inside or out. He gets along well with mares and geldings, and is easy to catch in the pasture.
